Vintage Mahogany Core Plug Pattern for Valve Body Foundry Casting Mold COOL!
Really neat wood pattern. This pattern is a core plug, it would represent the mold for the interior of the  casting being made.
Approx 14" top to bottom,  7 1/4" wide  a the widest(which is the approx center of the patttern)approx 5" in depth at the deepest part, lower part of pattern(flat board area, is 1 1/4" deep), diameter of the very top shaft is 2 1/2" inches. Weighs approx 3 1/2" pounds
The light colored areas are fillets(they fill in joints so that when the mold is pulled from the pattern, it comes off easier and does not get stuck in the joints)
There is some wear, this was foundry used. The screw holes on the lower part of the pattern(flat board area) are from foundry rigging. The two lower protruding pieces wiggle a little, it appears they were mounted on the board with  dowels.
This one would easily mount to the wall, and with the 2 1/2" shaft on top, would be a great base to make a wall lamp out of, diameter of the top shaft is  large enough to accommodate lamp hardware of some kind.
Today, there are almost no molds made anymore from wood.  They are either made from plastic stock or metal.
This mold  is from an age of days gone by, where most patterns were made from wood.
Pattern making is a  highly skilled trade that required a lot of handwork years ago, now most everything is made with CAD CAM machines.   Pattern making required often working within 5/1000ths of an inch, and was one of the highest paid trades.
My father is winding down his 50 year pattern industry business, and this came from his pattern archives.
Specifically, I do not know what  this was for, it is old enough that records are no longer available to identify  it. It was for some large piece of machinery.
This was the original wood mold, my fathers' business was subcontracted by a  foundry to make this original mold.
Made from solid mahogany.   My fathers' shop either painted all red, or left natural wood .
