    Description

Shanghai Mint - Rare Chinese Tourist Coins - Palace Lanterns w/ Cranes & Dragons.
The brass coins in this set are both 27 mm from the Shanghai Mint in China.  The dies were hand-engraved featuring the Auspicious Palance Lantern on the reverse by Yi Shizhong and on the obverse - (coin 1) Cranes by Yi Shizhong and (coin 2) Double Dragons by Zeng Chenghu.  The coin with the Cranes is dated 1980 and is considered a very difficult piece to find for any collector.
Each coin is enclosed in a hard plastic coin holder to maintain their brilliant uncirculated luster and has been stored in the original display case (as shown) when originally purchased in China.
The peak time for hand-engraving came when Shanghai Mint just started commemorative coin and medal production, from 1979 to the mid 1980’s.  As the hand-engraving process is slow, it was never used to produce coin dies which had a short deadline making these coins harder to find for collectors.
