Rare Antique Tuareg Boghdad Leather & Metal Riveted Cross Pendant Mali, Africa

$ 100.98

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Condition: This Tuareg amulet is very rare and very old and shows a lot of signs wear from tribal use and age. This cross is in great condition as these crosses are rare to find as they did not hold up well due to the leather and are usually found missing an arm or two off the cross. This amulet is missing a tad of the leather to both sides of the top of the cross were the perforation goes through but since this part of the cross is sandwiched between two pieces of metal it is not affected by this loss. The right hand arm of the cross has a crack all the way through the leather and is missing a very small piece of the leather at the end of the arm which has caused one rivite to be loose and it moves around a bit but it will not fall out. The bottom of the cross is missing two small pieces of leather and has two loose rivets which move in and out but will also not fall out. Please exam the photos carefully. This piece is as is and does have some damage but is still a very amazing collectible!

    Description

    This is a very rare, very old, antique Tuareg Boghdad
    cross pendant with a
    leather core which is decorated on the front with an engraved riveted
    ethnic fabricated mixed silver metal sheet which was handmade by the Tuareg metalsmiths and the smaller piece of metal on the back side is cut from recycled aluminum. This extremely rare Nomadic Boghdad cross comes from Central Mali from Tuareg Territory.
    This antique Tuareg
    Boghdad
    cross
    amulet is in great condition for this amulet's age and design type as these crosses are rare to find as they did not hold up well through the ages due to the leather and are usually found missing an arm or two off the cross. This amulet is missing a tad of the leather to both sides of the top of the cross were the perforation goes through but since this part of the cross is sandwiched between two pieces of metal it is not affected by this loss. The right hand arm has a crack through the leather of the cross and it is missing a very small piece of the leather on the end of the arm which has caused one rivite to be loose and it moves around a bit but it will not fall out. The bottom of the cross is missing two small pieces of leather and has two loose rivets which move in and out but will also not fall out. This leather is so old it almost looks like wood. Please exam the photos carefully as I am sure there are other small spots of wear although I tried to point out all major damage and this piece comes 'as is' and does have some a lot of wear but is still a very amazing collectible!
    This Tuareg Bedouin amulet measures 2.37 inches long by 2 inches wide. The Tuareg people of Niger are well known for their talented metalsmiths. The Tuareg are a large group of semi-nomadic people who share a common language and ancestry and who are related to the Berbers of Northern Africa. There are twenty three different Tuareg cross designs with each style being associated with a different region or Tuareg clan group. All of these cross designs exhibit in their own fashion both the female symbol and the male symbol. This Tuareg cross is very collectible and would be perfect for adding to your African jewelry or trade bead collection or for making a beautiful necklace and continuing the tradition of wearing the Tuareg cross. I combine shipping on multiple orders so please check out my ebay store where I have thousands of items to browse.
