Description

This striking estate find from the East End of Long Island is a remnant of Victorian-age craftsmanship, when master plasterers created ornate friezes and decorations on the walls and ceilings of lavishly appointed homes. The top layer of the frame appears to be lacquered oak, backed by unfinished pine with felt on the bottom. The mold itself has been hand-carved from ebony or another hardwood that has been treated to allow the plaster to release easily. There are several cracks in the mold, as well as a hole that appears to have been drilled in the back, likely to allow for hanging in the workshop.
With minor repairs, this mold could easily return to duty for a restoration buff. But it also makes for a beautiful wall hanging or curio in any design-conscious home. It is relatively large for such pieces, measuring approximately 24 inches long by 7 inches wide. It is just under two inches thick.
The piece has no apparent maker’s mark or catalog/design number.
