Each time that a giant panda is born and shows all the signs that it will survive to adulthood, it's a reason to celebrate. There are only about 2,000 giant pandas left in the entire world. This 1 oz. gold proof is the product of a cooperative effort between the Smithsonian and the Mint of China. Mintage of this piece was very limited, only 1,000 were struck.
Stunning Bao Bao Design
The obverse of this coin features Bao Bao, the baby giant panda. This panda is currently living at the National Zoo and doing well. In this design, she can be seen calmly observing what is before her. In addition to her name, this side is inscribed with the weight and fineness of the coin.
The design on the reverse symbolizes the cooperative effort. On the left, the Great Wall of China can be seen. On the right, the Smithsonian Castle is pictured.
