Up for auction is an authentic , original unsigned 1886 cabinet card photo of French actress of stage and early films ,Sarah Bernhardt ( 1844 - 1923 ) by Sarony of New York .
The unsigned photo measures approximately 4.25. “ x 6.5 “ in size and is good condition aside from expected slight age wear, including clipped corners. The albumin print of Bernhardt is sharp ,clear and free of any flaws.The backmark is stamped DUPL NYPL.
Sarah Bernhardt was considered the most famous French stage actress who starred in some of the popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries . She also played male roles including Shakespeare ‘ s Hamlet . Her critics called her “ the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture “ and praised her “ golden voice” . She made several theatrical tours around the world, was one of the first prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures.
