Description
This specimen is an exceptionally rare artifact from the Virginia and Truckee Railroad as payment to Mark Hopkins, Treasurer of the Central Pacific Railroad, in the amount of ,162.53. This check, which was drafted on August 24, 1876 just one month after the nation’s centennial celebration, is unique both as one of the single largest amounts of any of the V&T’s payments to the Central Pacific Railroad, and as a low triple digit number of the railroad’s newly minted insignia check series, No. 759. The check is in very fine condition, with typical early period cancellation marks. The front of the check is signed by H.M. Yerington, V&TRR Vice President. The back of the check is endorsed by E.W. Hopkins, agent of the London and San Francisco Bank Limited, Mark Hopkins, Treas. C.P.R.R and nephew of Mark Hopkins. E.W. Hopkins was then acting personal financial executor for Mark Hopkins in his final years and later became CPRR Treasurer after Mark Hopkins’ death just two years later in 1878.I am very interested in acquiring an 1877 V&TRR Co. check to Mark Hopkins endorsed by E.W. Hopkins, so I am offering this earlier important artifact.
